Punnett Intended Continued:

Overview

Todays lesson will be a continuation of punnett squares. We will begin by going over monohybrid crosses to make sure that all students are fluent in vocabulary as well as able to complete a cross.

Standards (Links)

LS3 (9-11) - 6
LS3 (9-11) - 7

Objectives

Students will be able to...

  • Apply terminology used in Mendelain genetics
  • Complete Punnett Squares for dihybrid crosses
  • Predict phenotypic and genotypic ratios for dihybrid crosses based on the Punnett Square

Materials / Preparation Notes

Dihybrid cross worksheet
A dihybrid cross with explanation on the board. Don't fill in any of it.

Opening

To begin the class I will discuss with students about dihybrid crosses. If any of them were able to complete the cross as their exit slip I will encourage them to share with the class how they were able to complete it and how they knew what to do. We will talk about the likely hood of both my curly hair and my brown hair being inherited by my children over a spouses straight blonde hair. "Is it more likely that I will pass on both traits, one of them or none? What about my spouse? Would it be fair to assume we both have the same odds of passing our traits?" Following these hypotheses will be notes and explanations on completing and analyzing dihybrid crosses.

Activities

To begin, we will complete a dihybrid cross together on the board. I will set up a cross and have a pre I will have students, one at a time inform me of what to fill into each block. The outside of the cross will not be filled in yet either so students will assist with the entire process before being asked to break up into pairs to fill one out on their own. Students will be completing a worksheet that scaffolds at first then takes away supports as it progresses. for students who are unable to complete the worksheet, or students needing extra time, they will be allowed to finish it for homework. While students are completing this worksheet, I will be moving around the room asking questions and making sure that they are understanding what they are doing. After I feel like most of the class has completed their work, I will discuss with the class how these crosses have certain odds associated with each combination of genes.

Closing/postlab

As an exit slip, students will pass in their completed classwork if they think that it is done. This will not be graded and will be used to assess formatively as a participation grade. I will correct and return the worksheets the next day.Assessment Notes
Assessment will be formative as part of their participation grade based on how they were able to set up their lab and if they were willing to participate in the Punnett square portion of the lesson.
